One in ten Brits would travel up to eight hours – to go to a live event abroad

One in ten Brits would be willing to travel for up to eight hours to a foreign city – to go to a live gig or sporting event, a study has found.

Nearly half of Brits (45%) say they would rather experience their favourite artist or sport in a city in a different country – with pop concerts (33%) and rock shows (35%) the top music events they would travel for.

And the poll of 2,000 adults, who travel abroad, found that 49% will specifically check when planning a trip whether there are any events happening that they may like to attend while they are away.

It emerged that New York is the number one city where Brits would choose to combine travel and live events – followed by Barcelona (15%) and Rome (11%).

Nearly two-thirds (63%) of those polled have previously combined a trip with going to a live event, while 58% would like to do so – either for the first time, or again, having done so before.

Some of the top reasons for choosing to do this include getting an opportunity you wouldn't in the UK (31%), and broadening your cultural horizons (24%).

The research was commissioned by ticket site viagogo, whose spokesman, Cris Miller, said: “More than ever before, people want to maximise their holiday experiences.

“Going to a live event to support your favourite team or discover a new artist has become the ultimate way to enrich a trip abroad.

“Our insights show that thousands of Brits are combining travel with live events this year – heading to the upcoming Rugby World Cup, Formula 1, Tomorrowland festival, or catching world-touring acts like Beyoncé and Coldplay.

“With more than 50 million event listings, fans looking to add an event onto an existing trip, or plan one around their best-loved act or team, are spoiled for choice.”

It also emerged that other top music genres that Brits would travel abroad for include classical music (20%), R&B and soul (18%), Indie (17%), and country music (16%), according to the research, via OnePoll.

And it is not just live music that holidaymakers want to see, as 32% also dream of attending a sports event abroad – with football (44%), tennis (19%), and motorsports (15%) among the most popular choices.

Other popular venues that they would travel to, outside of foreign cities, include beach towns (31%), iconic venues (27%), and lakeside areas (17%) also proved popular.

And 23% would most likely extend their trip to last three to four days – if it meant they could squeeze in a live event.

Cris Miller added: “New York was voted the number one dream place to go and experience an amazing live event, with both Tokyo and Sydney in the top 10.

“This is no surprise – the Big Apple is packed with world-class music venues, sporting arenas, and cultural sites that create fantastic “bucket list” experiences.

“Slightly closer to home, Spain, Italy, and France were all well-represented, as Brits continue to consider soaring travel and accommodation prices.

“Fans want somewhere easy and convenient where they have access to tickets in almost 200 countries, with listings to suit every budget.”
