Year after year it seems one city tops the lists of best places to live in the world, but what is it about this classy capital which makes it so liveable?
Vienna in Austria is once again the number one most livable city in Europe according to most lists for 2023 and has topped the tables for the last 10 years, with the only exceptions coming during the Covid pandemic when closed museums and restaurants cost it its title.
One survey carried out by the Economist this year revealed that Vienna had an “an unsurpassed combination of stability, good infrastructure, strong education, and healthcare services, and plenty of culture and entertainment”.
The report noted that its only flaw was a lack of major sporting events, but the city is not without its athletic thrills with the Vienna Derby between the cities two football clubs Rapid Vienna and Austria Vienna seeing tensions run high across the Austrian capital.
Vienna’s low crime rate is also a major factor, with a crime index rate of 26.85 – more than 50pc lower than London and Paris.

The city is also said to be one of the cleanest and greenest in the world, with many public parks located along the banks of the River Danube.
Must-see attractions such as the imposing St Stephen’s Cathedral, the Sigmund Freud Museum and the Staatsoper opera and ballet house also help its cause and Vienna even has its own culinary delights such as delicious chocolate and tasty Wiener Schnitzels to keep foodies happy.
Creative types are able to peruse more than 100 art galleries in the city, which attract more than eight million visitors every year, and Vienna even has its own genre of music, named Wienerlied, which is similar to folk music.

The city is steeped in history with Ludwig van Beethoven, Franz Kafka and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart all spending time living and working in Vienna.
Vienna is particularly popular in winter when blankets of snow cover its rooftops and its delightful Christmas markets begin.
Those wishing to see what all the fuss is about can get a return flight from Stansted for about £30 in January next year, with the average hotel priced at about £70 per night.
