A twist on 'The Little Mermaid' to be performed on Disney Wish

When the Disney Wish sets sail next summer, Disney Cruise Line’s newest ship will feature two original stage shows.

One is based on “The Little Mermaid” and the other will star Captain Minnie and other Disney and Pixar characters.

The shows were announced over the weekend at Destination D23, Disney’s fan convention, by Disney Parks, Experiences and Products chairman Josh D’Amaro.

The shows will be performed at the Walt Disney Theatre, which seats 1,274 and has projection mapping capabilities and a Dolby Atmost 3D audio system. Disney said the audio technology is a first in cruising.

“Disney The Little Mermaid” adapts the 1989 animated film to a Broadway-style stage show. It begins with a group of storytellers that discover an enchanted treasure chest. They will take on the roles of Ariel, Ursula, Prince Eric, Sebastian and Flounder to tell the tale of “The Little Mermaid” on stage.

The show will feature new orchestrations of classic songs from the film, video projections, contemporary costuming and puppetry.

“The Little Mermaid is a timeless story, one that transcends generations,” said Shelby Jiggetts-Tivony, Disney Live Entertainment’s vice president of creative and advanced development. “Our hope is that this new stage adaptation aboard the Disney Wish continues that incredible legacy, not by simply reenacting the elements that make the original film so powerful, but by reinterpreting it in a way that resonates with the audience sitting in the theater each night.”

A first-night show on Disney Wish

The Disney Wish will feature a special show on the first night of sailings with “Disney Seas the Adventure.”

During the show, Captain Minnie gives the helm to her friend Goofy. Along the way to discovering his own captaining abilities, he is joined by a number of Disney and Pixar characters performing popular songs like “Almost There” from “The Princess and the Frog” and “Go the Distance” from “Hercules.”

After the show, guests will be led by the characters into the Grand Hall for a send-off experience.

In addition to the new shows announced this weekend, the Disney Wish will feature the production “Disney’s Aladdin — A Musical Spectacular.”

Other entertainment will include the new Pirate’s Rockin’ Parlay Party, a nighttime deck celebration, immersive dining, a mobile interactive game and first-run films in the ship’s two cinemas.

The Disney Wish will set sail on June 9, 2022, with an inaugural season of three- and four-night cruises to the Bahamas and Castaway Cay from Port Canaveral, Fla.
