AmaWaterways will explore Black culture and history on a new France river cruise: Travel Weekly

AmaWaterways is launching a new river cruise and land itinerary in France to celebrate and explore Black cultural history in international destinations.

The Soulful Epicurean Experience on the River will make its first departure on Aug. 24, 2023, from Arles to Lyon, sailing the line’s seven-night Colors of Provence itinerary aboard the AmaKristina; booking will open on Sept. 30. The river cruise will include a three-night land tour in Paris, where many prominent African American artists, authors and entertainers found success and made history.

• Being Black in travel: A roundtable discussion

“Following ongoing dialogue between the AmaWaterways leadership team and our valued travel advisor partners in recent years, we identified significant demand for a curated experience that connects Black travelers both to each other and to international destinations rich with African-American history,” said Jazzmine Douse, director of national accounts at AmaWaterways and a member of Northstar Travel Group’s Black Advisory Board (Northstar is the parent company of Travel Weekly).

“We believe our Soulful Epicurean Experience on the River cruise is the perfect way to celebrate the heritage, traditions and cultures of our global family.”

The river cruise will take guests on the Rhone River and sail through the South of France, and the land tour of “Black Paris” will be conducted by a local tour company. Guests can expect guided tours throughout the journey that showcase the region’s jazz, food and wine as well as live musical performances onboard the ship and onshore. An exclusive excursion honoring entertainer and Black history icon Josephine Baker will also be included in the package.

AmaWaterways said it plans to expand its itineraries celebrating and exploring Black history and culture to other destinations.

The 156-passenger AmaKristina features spacious staterooms with twin balconies, a sun deck walking track, a swim-up bar and a Chef’s Table dining experience plus other amenities such as wellness programs, bikes and complimentary WiFi.
