An expert shared her top tips to avoid getting sick on a cruise holiday. Yasmin Pekel, owner of Blue Cruise, said there are a few ways to enjoy a “healthier” cruise.
Yasmin said: “Spending a significant amount of money on a cruise, only to find yourself bedridden, can be incredibly frustrating.
“To make the most, it’s best to brush up on your hygiene practices, which will lead to a much happier and healthier cruise!”
While the chance of catching a gastrointestinal disease on a cruise ship is one in 5,500, passengers will still want to take care.
If one guest catches an infectious disease, it can easily transmit to hundreds of other passengers onboard.
Yasmin said: “Be patient. Sometimes it can be difficult getting a table at a restaurant. If you manage to find a table, it is always worth flagging down a member of staff to properly sanitise the table before you sit.
“Doing so will protect yourself, your group and potentially other cruise goers. Similarly if you see a heavily crowded space, such as individuals flocking around the best dish at the buffet, it can be best to wait.
“As many respiratory viruses are airborne, keeping your distance and waiting for the crowd to disperse can protect you.”
It’s best not to enter too many crowded spaces on a cruise ship as they could put passengers more at risk of getting ill.
Respiratory viruses, including Covid, can spread fairly easily in confined and crowded spaces.
Yasmin added: “With a multitude of late-night bars and even nightclubs, a cruise ship can encourage a wild night.
“If you don’t imbibe, you may also want to participate in many of the activities offered onboard, leading to a lack of sleep.
“However, this can easily lead to illness, as sleep deprivation can directly impact your immune system.
“Try and get seven hours a night and pace yourself, you don’t want to have illness ruin your plans!”
As Yasmin says, a cruise ship will often have lots of choice when it comes to evening activities and it can be tempting to try everything.
However, an overpacked cruise schedule could easily tire passengers out and make them more likely to get sick.
Cruise passengers will likely have very busy schedules with tours and excursions filling their days.
It’s important to try to get at least seven hours of sleep a night to stay healthy and avoid getting sick.
Sleep deprivation can make a cruise passenger more likely to become ill which could ruin their holiday.
Cruise guests could make a plan of all the activities they want to try and make sure they account for a good night’s sleep.
