Cruise guest complains holiday felt like ‘boot camp’

Although cruise holidays are incredibly popular, they might not be every traveller’s cup of tea.

A user ‘LauraHill75’ said on Reddit: “I told the kids they would be able to eat whenever they wanted, that all the food was included and available at any time.

“I told them it would be lovely and luxurious and that we would go ashore and see new places every day.

“It was a long week of crowds, tight schedules, very limited options and long, hot processing for every stop and the worst of all was initial boarding and final disembark. The whole experience was more like a boot camp!”

The guest said the pool was far too small and they couldn’t believe people were smoking on the ship.

Usually food is included in the price of a cruise but guests will have to pay extra to eat at specialty restaurants or purchase alcohol.

Guests may need to pay for treats such as ice cream or sweets on some cruises and restaurants may have specific opening times.

Another guest ‘Ilovesparky13’ said: “Unfortunately, most major cruise lines have an issue with overcrowding. You create your own schedule both on and off ship, so I’m not sure what happened there.”

The world’s largest cruise ships will often carry thousands of guests and passengers may face queues in some areas.

A smaller ship, such as those used on river cruises, is unlikely to be as busy but may not have as many facilities.

Tourists could also try to cruise out of peak season to avoid overcrowding. Prices may also be cheaper during low season.

Another guest took issue with the passenger’s complaint over scheduling. They said: “You create your own schedule on and off the ship.”

Passengers are free to book their own excursions or explore by themselves but they will need to make sure they’re back to the ship in time.

Embarkation can be a lengthy process on the biggest ships as there are so many passengers to process.
