Cruise guest says cruises aren’t ‘the same anymore’

The cruise industry had a difficult pandemic with ships left empty and horror stories of passengers trapped onboard with Covid. A guest has said they don’t think cruising is the same anymore.

Reddit user ‘SlinkyMalinky20’ said: “From the seat hoarders to the elevator jumpers and the cattle herding lines, the budget cuts and the food quality, it’s just not the same experience anymore.”

Seat hoarders or “chair hogs” are passengers who use their towel or bag to save a pool lounger for several hours.

This can be extremely irritating for other guests as they are unable to find a seat by the swimming pool.

Some cruise lines remove passengers’ items if they have been left on the seat for longer than an hour.

The majority of passengers use the ship’s elevators to get around, as mega cruise ships can have as many as 18 decks.

However, some passengers have complained that other guests push them in the elevators or try to cram in when there isn’t space to do so.

Reddit user ‘IndependentL’ said: “We were disembarking and three people forced themselves in the elevator with their luggage, laughing about it.

“It caused my sister and I to almost fall over our luggage. The same cruise I caught Covid and haven’t cruised since.”

Although cruise lines try very hard to stop illnesses spreading, it can be difficult to stem the transmission of a virus.

As passengers are often packed into small spaces onboard, they may be more at risk of catching a bug.

Guests are advised to regularly sanitise their hands and stay away from public areas if they are feeling unwell.

Another guest ‘Kortar’ said: “Took my last ever cruise a few months ago. Have cruised several times in the past, including my honeymoon and always had a great time.

“Not sure if Covid screwed it up or what but the most recent experience was so awful, I don’t think I will ever be convinced to do another, regardless of how convenient.”

However, another passenger said they thought that the annoying behaviour wasn’t specific to cruise holidays.

‘Gcadays09’ said: “This definitely isn’t specific to cruises. This stuff happens all the time. It’s definitely annoying but it will happen everywhere.”

Many of the issues, such as elevator crowding or chair hogging, can also occur at hotels during peak season.

Cruise guests may also be able to avoid some of the chaos if they can cruise outside of peak season.

The school holidays are usually the busiest time for cruises so avoiding that period could save money and stress.

If it’s not possible to cruise outside of school holidays, guests could try choosing an out of season destination.

Guests could also look at smaller ships where there will be fewer people and less chance of overcrowding.
