Cruise holidays attract a wide range of customers with different interests. But one item of clothing is often used as a symbol.

A lot of cruise passengers make friends with their fellow guests on holiday, but some are looking to get a little closer.

Cruise guests have been warned that wearing clothing with pineapples on it could bring them unwanted attention.

One guest wrote on Reddit: “Some in the swinging community use pineapple images on clothing, jewellery and door decorations to flag that they are swingers.”

Guests looking to swing onboard may wear clothing with pineapples on it or hang a pineapple card on their door.

One passenger said that they had often spotted pineapples on cabin doors while on a cruise holiday.

They said: “I usually like to walk the decks for exercise. It’s fun to look for the pineapples on the doors.

“My last cruise, I only saw one as a maybe. No upside down ones, but definitely had the vibe.”

Some people claim that only an upside down pineapple is used as a symbol by the swinging community.

However, another guest said they had been approached by an eager couple when they were wearing pineapples.

“Bought a lovely black dress with pineapples all over it. Got approached by a disappointed couple.

“Dress collects dust in the closet now. Had no idea until they propositioned me,” said the passenger.

A guest added: “I have a significant amount of tropical shirts. The number was higher until I had a cruise where a few people were uncomfortably friendly to my wife and I.

“Someone finally let me know that wearing shirts with pineapples attract that type of attention and I should retire those shirts if we weren’t into that lifestyle.

“So my shirt collection went down by about half a dozen shirts after that cruise. It’s a shame that association is made from a pineapple mixed into a tropical print shirt.”

While some cruise holidaymakers were aware of the association, one was shocked saying: “This is not common knowledge.”

Another guest added: “My mum bought me pineapple themed jewellery from her last cruise, please let that be an innocent mistake!”

Pineapples might not be a universal symbol but people might want to avoid them if they don’t want to be approached.

Passengers who are interested in swinging could opt for a themed cruise dedicated to the lifestyle.

Bliss Lifestyle Cruises are adult-only cruises where clothing is optional in outdoor areas of the ship.

Other cruise lines also run special themed cruises for swingers with rooms set up for couples.
