Cruise passengers debate over buffet rules

The cruise ship buffet is usually one of the most popular dining options onboard as it’s included in every cruise package.

A passenger recently took to Reddit to complain about a woman who cut in “a long buffet line” for pancakes.

Although the passenger said they confronted the woman for skipping the queue, she still took the pancakes before the waiting guests.

One person ‘Timoat’ said: “I’d keep my eye on her, and for the rest of the cruise, whenever she’s about to take some food, I’d cut right in front of her. Every time, that would make my cruise really enjoyable actually.”

Another guest ‘revirrev’ said: “[You] did right in calling her on her boorish behaviour. We all need to stand up for decency.”

One poster said that “people turn into real savages at the buffet”, especially on cruise ships.

However, other guests thought the woman might have had a justifiable reason for skipping the buffet line.

‘Modernhomeowner’ said: “My rule with cutting is if I’m waiting for pancakes, and there is no one in front of me getting potatoes and you want potatoes, that’s totally fine, get your potatoes.”

Another guest said the woman might have been confused by the queuing system if people were approaching from different angles.

‘Johnsnc2000’ said: “I must admit though most of those sections have people coming from both sides and it’s easy to mess up.”

One guest said: “I feel like people instinctively line up like it’s an assembly line, but I feel you should be able to come in and grab what you need and go.”

Cruise lines may have different systems for queueing and passengers may need to ask the queue if they’re confused.

However, pushing in line to get pancakes before someone else is always likely to ignite some anger.
