Greek island faces cruise ship ‘nightmare’ with sunset ‘blocked’
The Greek island of Mykonos has seen a rise in cruise ships which some people have described as a “nightmare”.
This year, 895 cruise ships are expected to visit Mykonos and nearby Delos, according to stats from the Hellenic Ports Association, a rise from last year’s 608.
Georgios Haztimanolis shared a video showing five cruise ships docked by the pretty Greek island.
They tweeted: “Managed to get a video showing all five cruise ships here today in Mykonos, with a combined capacity of 14,000 passengers.
“Streets are full even in the middle of the day with the sun beating down. Not sure this is enjoyable for them or for the rest of visitors, certainly not sustainable.”

Cruise ship passengers tend to spend just one day on the island but the influx of tourists can put pressure on local services.
Greek City Times reports that the number of cruise passengers puts pressure on facilities such as public toilets and creates overcrowding in the island’s narrow streets.
Twitter user ‘Mykonos Traveller’ tweeted: “Don’t forget the traffic jam caused by all the buses, ATVs and cars rented which is truly a nightmare throughout the day while all these people are simultaneously on the island! Just compare it with any day that there are no cruise ships at all!”

Tweeter ‘Marat C’ shared a photo of a cruise ship in front of the sunset. Watching the sunset is a highlight of many travellers’ trips to Greece.
They said: “Another inconsiderate cruise ship blocking the sunset from the whole Mykonos bay. Just awful. Can you anchor somewhere else?”
The situation is likely to get worse in August, which is the peak holiday season on the popular island.
The island is expected to see eight cruise ships a day on August 22 with around 15,000 passengers due to disembark.
Mykonos isn’t the only holiday destination struggling to balance the cruise industry with the needs of local residents.
In Norway, residents have protested against the ships while campaigners in Marseille recently took to the water to rage against the number of ships.
