Man warned he may ‘come across as creepy’ for his cruise swimwear

The swimming pool is usually one of the most popular areas on a cruise ship. However, a passenger has been warned their swimming outfit might be considered “creepy”.

A passenger ‘awesomeus81’ wrote on Reddit: “I typically wear square-cut speedos at a pool. Is a speedo alright on a cruise or considered a no-no?

“You can’t beat the comfort of a speedo, but don’t want everyone rolling eyes behind my back because of some unwritten rule.”

Speedos aren’t usually banned in cruise ship swimming pools but some passengers said they wouldn’t be impressed by the outfit.

A Reddit user ‘HalfManHalfCyborg’ said: “Nobody is going to stop you. But I would say that in general it would be unusual.

“You might look around and figure you’re the only man wearing a speedo and not swimming shorts.

“Maybe that will make you feel self-conscious, or maybe you don’t care. But there’s no rule against them.”

Cruise lines will usually have their dress code on their website so guests will be able to check whether speedos are allowed.

The rules can vary between countries as well, with American guests the most likely to be shocked by speedos.

Another person said: “Americans generally don’t like to see men in speedos, ever. If your body is worth showing off people will hate you for it, and if it isn’t they’ll hate you for forcing them to notice it.

“Either way, you’re likely to come across as creepy. That said, besides a weird look or two, nothing bad will happen if you wear a speedo.”

Guests might get some looks if they’re wearing a speedo but this will be less likely on a European cruise.

In some areas of Europe, men are required to wear a speedo if they want to swim in a public pool.

Another guest ‘cynicalsowhat’ shared their advice. They said: “Bring it along with some trunks and see what you feel comfortable wearing.

“I do this with bikinis. I think you realise people’s opinions are their problem not yours.”

Guests could always pack a couple of different outfits if they’re worried about feeling self-conscious on their cruise.

A woman once faced a similar issue on a cruise when she worried that her “skimpy” bikini might not be appropriate for a cruise.

Cruise lines that cater for adults only are more likely to be relaxed about guests’ choice of swimwear.

Although this isn’t always the case, women guests might not be allowed to sunbathe topless next to the pool.

Guests can check the guidelines for their cruise on the company website or ring the line’s customer service desk.

If tourists book their cruise with a travel agent, the agent should also be able to offer some advice on clothing.
