Uniworld's Sao Gabriel makes debut in Portugal
Uniworld Boutique River Cruises on June 28 christened its newest Super Ship, the Sao Gabriel, officially launching the first post-pandemic sailings for Americans on Portugal’s Douro River.
The christening by godmother Joke De Bruyn, Uniworld’s director of operations, came just a week after Uniworld led the restart of European river cruising for Americans with the sailing in Italy of La Venezia.
“It was a delight to toast with our beloved loyal guests and crew, and celebrate being back on the rivers aboard our beautiful brand-new Super Ship,” said Uniworld CEO Ellen Bettridge. “This is only the beginning for us. It’s been a journey, but after recently setting sail in Italy and now Portugal, we’re looking forward to continuing this momentum with the restart of our itineraries in France and Central Europe next month.”

Other lines will be close behind, with limited sailings for Americans beginning July 1 in Portugal and France. Multi-country cruises on the Danube and Rhine are scheduled to follow later this summer as Europe gradually reopens.
The Sao Gabriel replaces its older Douro vessel, the Queen Isabel.
Uniworld is also set to launch a new Super Ship on the Nile in September, the Sphinx.
The new ships are part of Uniworld’s ongoing effort to upgrade its entire fleet to Super Ships, which have more suites and expanded dining options.
Uniworld is also set to launch a new vessel in Asia this year, the Mekong Jewel.
