A mini Bavaria arrives at the Brisbane Showgrounds
More than 40,000 people are expected to don their dirndls and lederhosen and flock to the Brisbane Showgrounds from today, with Oktoberfest celebrations getting underway.
Now in its 12th year, the internationally renowned Oktoberfest Brisbane is Australia’s largest German festival, with culture-seeking enthusiasts descending on the Showgrounds to enjoy the Queensland take on the famous Munich folk festival.
Held over two weekends (October 11-13 and 18-20) the festival will turn the Brisbane Showgrounds into a Bavarian wonderland, with world-famous German beer and food such as pork knuckles and schnitzels plus authentic entertainment including a Bavarian Oomph band and Heidi the Yodeller.
There will also be a range of events and competitions for those keen to get in on the action, including a Miss Oktoberfest Brisbane competition as well as an ultimate Bavarian Strongmen relay, where teams race each other in a series of events including keg rolling, stein holding and Krapfen (jam donut) eating.
Brisbane Showgrounds General Manager of Venue Sales and Marketing Jago Coyle said the hugely popular event had been drawing crowds to the Showgrounds since it was first held in 2008.
“Oktoberfest Brisbane is a fantastic festival with an incredible atmosphere and we are pleased to have been its official home since it was first introduced a decade ago,” he said.
“October is a busy month for us, with the world’s biggest pinot noir festival, Pinot Palooza, also taking place this Sunday 13. Other events held across the month include the Brisbane Vegan Expo on October 19-20 and the popular Let’s Go Brisbane Caravan and Outdoor Sale (October 31- November 3) with more than 15,000 people expected to attend.”
Gates to Oktoberfest Brisbane open at 4pm today.
The 22 hectare Brisbane Showgrounds precinct is located just 1.5km from Brisbane’s CBD and is Queensland’s largest indoor / outdoor events site.
