Singapore Airlines announced as winner of  Best Cellar in the Sky

Singapore Airlines (SIA) has taken out three of the top medals in Cellars in the Sky, the annual awards that recognise the best Business and First Class wines served by airlines worldwide.

Announced in London late last month, SIA won the coveted Gold Medal for Best Overall Cellar, plus the top spots for Best Business Class Cellar and Best Business Class White categories (2015 Coldstream Hills Chardonnay, Yarra Valley, Victoria, Australia). The Airline received honours in seven of the 14 categories at this year’s awards.

This is the second time SIA has been awarded the Gold Medal for Overall Wine Cellar after taking home the prize in 2015.

Cellars in the Sky, hosted by Business Traveller, a UK-based leading business travel publication, is in its 33rd year and judged by renowned wine critics including Tim Atkin MW, Sarah Abbott MW and Peter McCombie MW. Thirty-two airlines from across the world entered the awards in 2017, with blind tastings taking place at the Hilton London Tower Bridge in December.

SIA is renowned for its wine programme, being the first carrier in the world to have a dedicated wine panel selecting its wine list. Established in 1989, the international wine panel is made up of Michael Hill Smith MW (Australia), Oz Clarke (UK) and Jeannie Cho Lee MW (Hong Kong) who taste over a thousand wines and champagnes for the Airline each year. Together, the panel is responsible for recommending the wines, champagnes and port to be served in all classes and on all routes flown by SIA. The wines are judged based on quality and their suitability for drinking on board the aircraft, where the atmosphere tends to be drier.

Wine panel member Michael Hill Smith MW said on the current win: “Singapore Airlines takes its wine and food very seriously indeed and Jeannie, Oz and I are delighted to see our wines do so well. I’m sure we will raise a glass together when we catch up in Singapore at our next tasting”.

Our wine panel works incredibly hard to ensure that the wines that are served across all cabin classes on our flights are of the highest quality and represent the regions to which we operate. It is an honour for their work to be recognised with this award.”

SIA’s panel of wine experts celebrates thirty years of curating the Airline’s onboard wine and champagne selection in 2019.
