Teds Travels – Re-exploring Seven Lakes

What I love about travelling around South America is “rediscovering¨ areas I’ve been to earlier in life but haven’t been there again for a long time. Some of these places where hard to get to in those days, there was no infrastructure to travel there and see all of those stunning landscapes. Today that has changed and there are new roads, and even great accommodation to stay at!

One of those areas is the Lakes District of Chile and Argentina. Since my very first trip in 1975, the experience got its name and until today in known as the “Lakes Crossing”. The trip by bus and by boat between San Carlos de Bariloche to Puerto Montt was an absolutely beautiful one-day trip. In the early days, I once described the area as similar as Switzerland but clients that came back told me it was much better! There is so much to do and see than just doing the “one day Lakes Crossing”.

Today instead of one-day crossing, why not travel around for 5 or 10 days? Our itineraries can start and or finish at either Temuco, Bariloche, or Puerto Varas. Driving via main towns like Pucon, San Martin, Villa La Angostura, Osorno, Valdivia, Puerto Montt, with lots of small villages in between, the route is called the Seven Lakes.

We will design an itinerary tailored to your clients interests, from flowers to forests, birdwatching to fly fishing, walking and trekking in National Parks, canoeing or kayaking, biking, climbing volcanoes, or even painting and photography. Let´s not forget local cuisine and Bariloche´s famous chocolate shops! Or just enjoy good-old sightseeing of a spectacular landscape.

Today the roads are paved and have great signage, we encourage clients to fly-drive and/or have their own driver guide. This is great value for money if there are 4 friends or family traveling together. We will find your clients a spa resort ¨termas¨ for accommodation at the end of the day that they won´t want to leave. Just imagine looking out over a still-water lake, with mirror-image of snow-capped peaks with green forests running up the slopes, or maybe a distant waterfall…

And there’s more! Along the 250kms route there are picturesque villages with cafes, gardens shops and viewpoints, and amazing accommodation in the form of country lodges and spas… mark my words: it’s just beautiful! To enhance their experience why not suggest having a picnic, it can easily be done, problem will be defining where to have it, there are too many places to choose from! And that is why I always ask if we can add an extra day to clients’ itineraries. A small hint, the airfares stays the same!
