Marriott sets new opening date for its long-awaited Vegas project

Marriott International is targeting an October 2023 debut for its long-awaited JW Marriott hotel-casino project on the Las Vegas Strip.

Marriott’s website describes the 3,700-plus-room
JW Marriott Las Vegas Blvd. as a “new generation” Las Vegas resort, set
to include a JW Marriott hotel as well as a 900-plus-room Edition
property.

The complex is also on track to include
multiple retail, spa, nightlife, pool, casino and culinary experiences
as well as more than 500,000 square feet of meetings and event space.

Additionally,
the JW Marriott Las Vegas Blvd will be the only integrated resort
connected to the Las Vegas Convention Center expansion via a pedestrian
skybridge, according to Marriott.

The history of the development is a long and winding one. When it broke ground at the northern end of the Strip in 2007, it was originally set to be branded as the Fontainebleau Las Vegas. That project went bankrupt, and construction stalled in 2009. Marriott later entered the picture, unveiling plans in 2018 to reflag the complex as the Drew Las Vegas.

As of late 2019, the project was slated to comprise three hotels: a JW Marriott, an outpost of Marriott’s high-end Edition brand and a property called the Reserve by Drew.

Earlier this year, however, the development changed hands, with Koch Industries and developer Jeffrey Soffer acquiring the unfinished resort from developer Steve Witkoff in February.

A Marriott spokeswoman confirmed that the company is currently in talks with the new ownership about their plans, though further updates on the project are unavailable at this time.
