Martinique and Guadeloupe in Covid lockdown

Martinique and Guadeloupe are in lockdown, due to a surge in Covid cases on the islands.

A curfew on Martinique took effect on Aug. 10 and will last three weeks. Curfew hours run from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m.

On Guadeloupe, curfew hours run from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. through the end of August. Bars, gyms, stadiums and swimming pools are closed.

Martinique authorities have recommended that visitors not continue their stays.

“Accommodation establishments will not be closed during this period of lockdown. Visitors will have time to consider what to do, while complying with the measures in force. The Martinique Tourism Authority is mobilized to respond to visitors’ requests for information  and to provide assistance for their departure from the island,” according to a statement from the tourism authority.

Hotels and vacation rental platforms are offering flexible, no-cost deferral and cancellation terms tailored to the crisis. The four main airlines that serve Martinique (Air France, Air Caraibes, Corsair and Air Belgium) have revised their flight schedules to assist French and Belgian travelers in their departure plans.

During the hours of 5 a.m. to 7 p.m. people on Martinique cannot venture further than half a mile from their homes. If they go further, they need a “derogatory travel certificate” explaining why they left their house.

Nonessential stores are closed to the public; working from home when possible is recommended.

Currently, there are no flights operating from the U.S. to Martinique and no reported American tourists on the island at present, according to the Martinique Tourism Authority.
