Teen's Death at Horseshoe Bend Overlook an Accident

Tragedy befell one family over the Christmas holidays as they were visiting a popular U.S. hiking destination.

A 14-year-old girl fell from the Horseshoe Bend Overlook in Page, Arizona, and died from her injuries.

The teen was reported missing by her family on December 24, which resulted in a search by the Arizona Department of Public Safety and Coconino County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue team.

The Coconino Sheriff’s Office found the teen’s body 700 feet below the Horseshoe Bend Overlook. Her body was spotted by helicopter on Monday evening, but due to nighttime conditions, they couldn’t retrieve her body until Christmas morning around 10 a.m.

The Horseshoe Bend Overlook receives thousands of visitors per days. A viewing deck with safety railings was installed in 2017 due to safety concerns.

Though the incident is under investigation, officials believe the 14-year-old’s fall was accidental.

This is not the only accidental death from a fall at a popular overlook to occur this year. A travel blogger couple fell to their deaths below Taft Point at Yosemite in October.
