Everyone loves a little bit of luxury – but sadly, our bank balances can prevent us from splashing out.
When booking holidays, many of us will swerve sea view rooms or roomy suites in order to get a better bargain.
But if you have sacrificed these amenities on your next trip abroad, all hope is not lost.
Experts have revealed an easy way to bag an accommodation upgrade.
A USA Today report claims you can get a better deal by phoning the front desk before arrival.
Speaking politely and directly to these staff members is advisable as they are the ones with the power to issue upgrades.
Cheri Young, associate professor at the University of Denver’s school of hospitality management, explained: “The front desk agents are the ones who choose a room for you when you check in, choosing from the available inventory.
“If you call beforehand, you can talk to a front desk clerk and ask about the best rooms, like corner rooms, a room on a higher floor, away from the elevators and ice machines.”
Similar advice was issued by hotel expert and author Jacob Tomsky.
He told The Sun: “You may not realise it, but the person on front desk has a whole host of powers when it comes to deciding what room you’re in.
“The main thing that people need to do is slow down their check in and treat the front desk agent like a human being who is making some very important decisions that will affect their stay.”
If you manage to sweet talk your way to a hotel upgrade, you may want to consider schmoozing airport staff too.

3. Being loyal – airlines often reward customers who are frequent flyers
4. Dressing to impress – they’re unlikely to let you into first class if you look like a slob
