Britons in need of some fresh air may be looking at a holiday by the sea. But with thousands of miles of coastline, it can be hard to know where to go for a UK seaside holiday.

Looking at factors including safety, entertainment, accessibility and lifeguard availability, Island Cottage Holidays has published its Safest Shores’ findings.

The best beach for families was Ventnor Beach on the Isle of Wight.

Ventnor had the best cumulative score and also came top for friendliness and entertainment.

The beach also had top great entertainment score with activities such as the Blackgang Chine Amusement Park and the Isle of Wight Donkey Sanctuary close by.

On Tripadvisor, Janine L said: “Ventnor was well worth a visit. A very pretty place by the sea.”

Jackie W wrote: “It’s the first time I have swum in the sea for years and I am going again today!

“The beach is lovely and the sea is flat calm and gently shelving.

“There are deckchairs etc if you want them and ice cream nearby but no noisy “entertainments”.

“A good old-fashioned seaside which I love.”

Peter C, meanwhile, wrote: “Ventnor is a lovely spot, beach at the foot of cliffs with winding roads to it, and very beautiful views from the seafront back up to the top of the town. Truly delightful.”

Shannon Keary, PR Manager at Island Cottage Holidays, said: “With staycations on the rise and families once again looking to get away during half term now schools have reconvened, it’s never been more important to pick the right destination.

“While local safety is obviously a key factor, it’s interesting to see how popular beaches compare when it comes to other metrics, including entertainment value, accessibility and food provisions for little ones, to make sure they’re getting the most out of their trip away.”

In second place was Woolacombe Beach in Devon.

On Tripadvisor, David Q said: “Great beach! stunning in the sunshine as well as the rain (we had both).

“Great for families and watersports enthusiasts alike. Very clean and well kept.”

Ann H wrote: “It is a wide expanse of golden sand with lots of shallow water areas ideal for paddling and for children.

“Lifeguards were there when we were to make it even safer and it was a lovely warm day so very busy. Lots of shops to wander to as well as cafes.”

Third was Whitesands in Pembrokeshire.

On Tripadvisor, Didier said: “Lovely beach perfect for a family day out. It was very beautiful and so big that there was plenty of space for everyone.”

User Tom said: “One of the best beaches in the country.

“I went in the sea every day , the waves were unusually small , but it is normally a good surfing beach.

“The cafe at the top of the car park is pretty good if you forget anything , but I would recommend a flask and sandwiches and set up shop all day.

“Lovely beach in a fantastic setting.”
