Breeze Airways orders more Airbus A220s

Startup low-cost airline Breeze Airways has ordered 20 additional Airbus A220-300 aircraft.

The planes will augment the 60 A220s that Breeze already had on order. The list price for the aircraft is $1.8 billion, according to published Airbus figures, though airlines typically pay substantially less than the list price on multi-aircraft purchases.

Breeze announced the new purchase commitment as it unveiled its first image of an A220 painted in the airline’s livery. That aircraft will be delivered from Airbus’ manufacturing facility in Mobile, Ala., to the carrier on Oct. 26.  Thereafter, the airline expects to receive one A220 per month for the following six and a half years.

Breeze began service in May, flying short-haul operations to 16 cities with a fleet of 13 single-class Embraer aircraft.

The carrier will use its A220s to cover longer distances, eventually including international routes. Breeze said that it will begin A220 service during the second quarter of 2022, with routes to be revealed early next year. Among the routes will be transcontinental city pairs that currently have no nonstop service.

Breeze has yet to announce seating configurations for its A220s, but the carrier says the planes will have premium and economy cabins.
