Icelandic airline Play launching Baltimore and Boston service in spring

The new Icelandic discount carrier Play will launch its first U.S. routes in April.

Play will fly from Baltimore to Reykjavik beginning April 20, with connecting service to 21 European destinations. Boston-Reykjavik service will follow on May 11. 

The carrier hasn’t announced the frequency of those routes, though a spokesperson said they will be several times a week but less than daily. 

Play began service between Iceland and Europe this past summer flying a fleet of three single-class Airbus A321neos. 

Like its defunct Icelandic predecessor Wow Air, Play intends to focus much of its service model on offering easy one-stop connections between the U.S. and Europe, though direct Reykjavik service will also be a key revenue maker. 

The Baltimore and Boston routes will be optimized for quick connections to 10 European destinations: Berlin Brandenburg; Brussels; Copenhagen; Dublin; Gothenberg, Sweden; London Stansted; Paris de Gaulle; Stavanger, Norway; Stuttgart, Germany; and Trondheim, Norway. 

The carrier flies under a ultralow-cost business model, with low base fares and upcharges for carry-on and checked bags as well as advance seat assignments, food and beverages, and other ancillary items. 

Tickets went on sale Dec. 16.
