Secretary of State for Transport Grant Shapps told Britons the Balearic Islands would be on the amber list. This includes holiday destinations such as Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza, and Formentera.

The MP made the following announcements on Twitter. He wrote: “From 4.00am Monday 19th July Bulgaria & Hong Kong will be added to the green list and Croatia & Taiwan the green watchlist of destinations.

“Please check latest travel advice before you travel as countries and territories may have extra requirements before you get there.

“We’re also moving the Balearic Islands & British Virgin Islands to the amber list – previously on the green watchlist. Also, from 19/07 if you’re fully #Vaccinated in the UK you can return to England from amber countries and territories without needing to quarantine.

“Four countries and territories will join the red list to safeguard our domestic vaccine rollout. We’ll keep these measures under review and be guided by the latest data – we won’t hesitate to take action if needed to protect public health.”

Many complained about the “political decision” to keep the United Arab Emirates (UAE), including Dubai, on the red list.

One wrote: “The fact UAE is still on the red list is an absolute joke.

“The highest rates of vaccinations in the world and one of the best healthcare systems. Minimal deaths and hospitalisations. The traffic light system is a con and all political.”

“Completely political decision,” another said. “I’m double jabbed in the UAE with AZ so it’s absolutely infuriating I still can’t visit family back home.”

Another wrote: “It’s supposedly because the UAE is an air traffic hub so we would mix with people transitting from all over and spend seven hours on the plane with them. Same reason as Qatar and Turkey being on the red list.”

“But what about the other airports in Turkey?” one wrote. “Dalaman, bodrum, Izmir & Antalya. They’re not hubs.”

Others bemoaned the toll the decision will take on holiday plans.

One wrote: “Essentially this is a huge ‘F you’ to young people who’ve been hanging on a thread to book holidays.

“Now denying them the right to go – all because we’ve not had the opportunity to have our second opportunity. What a shambles, infection rate his higher in the UK at the moment!”

Another said: “Some of us didn’t see family for almost two years and cannot afford the quarantine and tests, just because of all of the crazy rules!

“I have been patient for so long, but it breaks my heart when every time they promise something in the end it doesn’t happen.”

Another said: “What’s the point of moving the Balearics to the amber list unless they have a different variant? Our infection rate surely it’s the highest in Europe and only going to get higher?”

“Absolute joke,” another wrote. “We fly home from Menorca on Monday dinner! I’ve been double jabbed so don’t have to quarantine but my gf has only had one.

“We live together, I can leave the house and go work but she can’t.

“What is the point? Absolute shambles!”

More clamoured for Turkey to be removed from the red list.

“No mention of Turkey AGAIN. It’s time to let the public know the criteria for these traffic light lists, time to be honest for once!” one said.

“I am in Turkey, I need to come home to see my family, to introduce them to my 18 month old son, it’s not even about a holiday! #ReuniteFamilies.”

One asked: “Can I ask why Turkey hasn’t move from the red list when it has lower cases than us.”

“It’s all about the money,” another said. “The gov know well and truly if Turkey goes to amber everyone is going to flock to turkey and spend the summer there, no one will want to stay in the uk especially with the high rate of delta variant. Turkey has a high vaccination rate better than Bulgaria.”

“Mr PM you dont make sense at all. TURKEY NEEDS to be AMBER,” one said.

“People needs to visit their family and friends. And they have very good with vaccine and they have low daily covid cases.”
