Travel expert Alex Outhwaite has traversed the world extensively. The backpacker and travel-lover presents Off The Grid and Backpack on Travelxp, on SKY in the UK. She has travelled all over Central and South America, as well as Asia.

The traveller, who documents her travels on her Youtube and Instagram accounts, where she boasts 156k subscribers and 59k followers respectively, shared her tips to travel cheaply with Express.co.uk.

Book separately

Avoiding package deals is key to keep costs low, Alex says.

“I generally always book everything separately, I never book packages,” she explains.

“I book buses separately, accommodation separately, if I’m taking a flight then I’ll book it using Skyscanner or another price comparison website.”

Loyalty schemes

Alex says: “I’m also signed up to quite a lot of loyalty programmes through Expedia and other similar schemes.

“The more you use certain brands the more you are going to be rewarded with free night stays and things like that, which can save a lot of money.”

Sign up for this flight discount newsletter

Alex is an advocate of a certain discount newsletter, which can offer huge discounts.

Alex uses Jack’s Flight Club, a company with a newsletter and an app that send out cheap flight deal alerts.

Alex said: “I’ve signed up to Jack’s Flight Club.

“They send an email out every few days with the best flight deals, such as if there is a huge sale on an airline but they also find error sales as well.

“I’ve seen ones where it’s £250 return to Rio and stuff like that, due to an error on the website but it will be available for a few hours so if you’re able to be a bit flexible you can get some absolutely amazing deals.”

Travel by land

Alex has travelled largely over land, which is a great way to save cash – although it does take time.

“I’ve visited nearly 70 countries,” Alex says. “The overland way means if you are interested in visiting quite a few countries then you’ve probably only got the cost of one international flight to look at, really.

“For the first two or three months of the year, my partner and I will go away and spend those three months travelling slowly through some countries.

“There is only so well you can get to know a country in a few days so it’s nice to spend some time if you have flexibility or your work allows it.”

Alex tipped Express readers off to her top little known UK staycation destination if they want to avoid “busy” Cornwall and Devon.

Alex said: “The Yorkshire Wolds are maybe going to be added to the Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

“I think it’s been 25 years since they added a new place to the list.

“It’s quite a big thing for the Yorkshire Wolds,” Alex went on.

“They are so, so beautiful. The hills and valleys, it’s absolutely stunning.”
