Airport worker shows tape that ‘holds planes together’ – putting some off flying

An airport worker claimed that staff use tape to "hold planes together", which has left some travel fans feeling nervy.

The TikToker, who works on the runway, posted the clip on Sunday (June 19).

They asked viewers: "Any other ramp agents notice this all the time?"

The video, which has garnered more than 1.8 million views, shows different parts of a plane being taped up – including the wings, body and the rim around the engines.

"Point of view: You start to notice all the tape and flex seal that holds planes together," the overlay text stated.

The short seven-second video has left some viewers unsettled.

One said: "Maybe I don't want to travel anymore."

"Ah yes, totally needed this before I board a seven-hour flight," another sarcastically commented.

But some accused the airport employee of scaremongering.

They criticised the wording of "tape" and "flex seal" – adding that it's "misleading".

Despite looking like a last-minute DIY fix job, it's actually common practice and not the average duct tape sold in stores.

The silver strip is believed to be speed tape, widely used in the aviation industry to carry out quick repairs on flights so as to avoid delays.

In one incident, an easyJet passenger was shocked to see a worker putting a tape around the engine before take-off.

The budget airline has since responded: "EasyJet occasionally uses this high speed metallic tape, which is always used in accordance with the approved aircraft manuals and repair processes, and in no way compromises the safety of the aircraft.

"The safety and wellbeing of passengers and crew is always easyJet's priority."

High speed tape is an aluminium pressure-sensitive tape, which can sometimes be used in temporary minor repairs on aircrafts and racing cars.
