‘Amazing’ destination crowned most popular summer holiday hotspot

  • With summer just around the corner, many Britons are rushing to book a last-minute holiday. This year’s top trending overseas holiday hotspot for Britons is an “amazing” coastal destination, according to Tripadvisor data. This year, a sunny coastal resort took the top spot while Spain, a classic British favourite, was the second most popular. 

    Whether a beach break or a city adventure is on the menu, the list has plenty of inspiration for any Britons left to book.

    1. Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt

    This year’s top trending international destination was Sharm El Sheikh, on Egypt’s Red Sea coast. The stunning resort is renowned for sandy beaches, clear water and coral reefs that are perfect for scuba diving or snorkelling. 

    British tourists will also benefit from cheap prices in Egypt due to the strength of the British pound against the Egyptian pound. 

    The Ras Mohammed National Park is Sharm El Sheikh’s top-rated attraction with one tourist describing it as the “most amazing place to snorkel.” 

    Tourists might also want to head to Ras Um Sid or Shark’s Bay Beach to relax while the Al Mustafa mosque is one of the city’s most beautiful.

    2. Benidorm, Spain

    One of Spain’s most well-known resorts, Benidorm was the Mediterranean country’s top trending destination for summer. 

    Benidorm was actually one of the world’s first package holiday destinations and is still thriving today, so much so that it was the inspiration behind the popular ITV’s comedy of the same name. 

    Given its long-standing popularity with Britons,  the resort is famously home to a range of restaurants selling British classics such as fry-ups and fish and chips, plus plenty of thriving bars and nightclubs.

    But Benidorm’s not just about nightlife and bacon, the city’s Playa de Levante is the perfect place to unwind with azure waters.

    Tourists should head to the Balcon del Mediterraneo to enjoy panoramic city views while a bike tour is the perfect way to learn more about Benidorm’s lively culture.

    3. Benalmadena, Spain

    Further south, another Spanish spot rounded off the top three trending destinations on Tripadvisor. Just outside Malaga, Benalmadena is the ideal Costa del Sol destination for Britons looking to soak up the sun. 

    The town’s modern Puerto Marina is home to the Sea Life aquarium while tourists will find a monument dedicated to Christopher Columbus in the centre of the Old Town. 

    Families might want to check out the town’s excellent Butterfly Park while the Parque de La Paloma is the perfect place to catch some rays.

    4. Playa Blanca, Lanzarote

    Although the Canary Islands are often considered a winter sun destination, the islands have just as much to offer in summer. This is also when prices tend to drop for the islands. 

    Playa Blanca, Lanzarote’s southernmost town, is the island’s newest resort and holidaymakers will have a huge number of sandy beaches to explore. 

    Britons looking for golden sandy beaches and calm water will find plenty to enjoy in this growing Spanish destination.

    5. Hurghada, Egypt

    The second Egyptian destination to make the list, Hurghada is another fantastic choice for Britons holidaying on a budget this year. 

    The stunning beach resort stretches for 40 km along the Red Sea Coast and is world-renowned for scuba diving. 

    Tourists will find a huge range of restaurants and bars in Hurghada while a visit to the old town, El Dahar, is the ideal way to experience the local culture.

    6. New York City, USA

    The Big Apple grabbed sixth place on the list and is the ideal destination for Britons looking for an action packed city break. 

    From the masterpieces at the Metropolitan Museum of Art to picnics in Central Park, New York is packed with attractions.

    7. Puerto del Carmen, Lanzarote

    The second Lanzarote hotspot on the list, Puerto del Carmen is one of the island’s best resort towns. 

    Located on the southeast coast, tourists will find gorgeous sandy beaches such as Playa Grande and Matagorda. 

    Children will love the zoo at the Rancho Texas Lanzarote Park, a slice of southern America in Spain.

    8. Torremolinos, Spain

    Another of Spain’s best Costa del Sol towns, Torremolinos is best known for its sandy beaches and lively nightlife. 

    Golf fans will also find several courses to choose from while children will love the resort’s amusement parks. 

    La Carihuela is the town’s top-rated beach on Tripadvisor and is very close to restaurants and facilities. 

    At dinnertime, tourists might like to head to Calle San Miguel, the centre of the town’s evening activities.

    9. Dubrovnik, Croatia

    Based on the Adriatic Sea, it’s not hard to see why Dubrovnik is one of Croatia’s most popular destinations. 

    Although it’s often cheaper to stay outside the city walls, tourists can head inside the walled city to find some of Dubrovnik’s best restaurants and bars.

    After exploring the city, tourists might like to head to one of its stunning beaches or even take out a sea kayak to explore.

    10. Costa Adeje, Spain

    Situated on the southwestern coast of Tenerife, the Costa Adeje is another of the Canary Islands’ top hotspots. 

    The resort is the ideal place to try scuba diving for the first time and also has some top-rated golf courses. 

    Costa Adeje’s best-rated beach is Playa del Duque, a black sand beach, which is usually sheltered from the waves.

    In the evening, the resort has a huge range of bars and restaurants to choose from with family-friendly options available.

    Those hoping to holiday on the Costa Adeje will fly into either Tenerife-South Airport or Tenerife-North Airport, though the southern airport is the closest.
