Amtrak's Roomette Fares Are 2-for-1 For Summer Travel

The fast-approaching summer is looking bright, thanks to news that vaccinated Americans can travel safely and freely, according to the CDC. For those who are itching to plan a trip, but still aren’t ready to get on a plane quite yet—or are looking for a more picturesque mode of transport—Amtrak has a sweet summer deal. It’s buy one, get one for private roomette tickets, which means you can bring a friend, family member, or partner along for free.

The sale, which runs through April 16, is good on private roomette travel between June 1 and September 30, and drops some fares below $100 per person. It’s also valid on a whopping 15 train lines, including some of our picturesque favorites. The California Zephyr connects Chicago to the Bay Area on a 52-hour ride, but we love the more manageable 15-hour, daytime jaunt from Denver to Salt Lake City on the same train, which passes through the Rocky Mountains. Fares in a roomette for that leg are just $126 each for a pair of travelers. If you’re looking for a long-haul, though, check out the Empire Builder, which connects Chicago and Seattle on a two-night, three-day journey that passes Glacier National Park. Roomettes are pricier at $263 each for two travelers, but a steal compared to the usual $1,000-plus fares. The Capitol Limited, Cardinal, City of New Orleans, Coast Starlight, Crescent, Lake Shore Limited, Northeast Regional, Silver Star, Silver Meteor, Southwest Chief, Sunset Limited, and Texas Eagle are also offering roomette deals.

The Auto Train, which rarely makes an appearance in Amtrak deals, is also included. This unique train ferries cars, trucks, and motorcycles, and their passengers (you’re actually required to be traveling with a vehicle) on a non-stop, 17-hour route between Lorton, Virginia, on the outskirts of Washington, D.C., and Sanford, Florida, near Orlando. During the sale, fares for roomettes on the Auto Train cost as low as $148 each for a duo, plus the cost of your car (between $150 and $240, depending on what you’re bringing).

If you’re wondering, why book a roomette over a regular Amtrak seat, know it comes with major perks and creature comforts. While petite, the private room features a huge picture window with two seats during the day and two sleeping bunks at night, plus complimentary meals. You’ll also get access to a restroom in your train car and shower.

To book, head to Amtrak’s designated sale site or enter the discount code C645 if you’re using the Amtrak app.

A reminder: It’s Amtrak policy—and now federal law—that travelers wear face masks while in the station and on the train, unless eating or drinking, regardless of vaccination status, so be sure to pack one for your journey.
