‘Beautiful’ city is one of Europe’s most walkable
Love to explore a new city on foot? One of Europe’s most walkable cities is a beautiful destination in southern Germany that’s enchanting in summer and winter.
According to a ranking from Booking.com, Munich in Germany’s southern Bavarian region is one of the world’s most walkable cities. Although it’s most famous for the Oktoberfest festival, there’s plenty to explore outside of beer season.
In 1972, Munich hosted the Olympic Games and the city’s Lord Mayor made a significant change to the city’s infrastructure. A large area of Munich’s Aldstadt was pedestrianised, creating Germany’s first car-free shopping zone.
Today, much of the city’s Old Town is pedestrianised, making Munich the ideal spot to explore on foot. Many of its top attractions are a short distance from each other.
The heart of Munich, Marienplatz square is known as the city’s front parlour and is one of its most idyllic spots.

One of its top sights is the Rathaus-Glockenspiel clock which reenacts scenes from Munich’s history twice per day.
Tourist ‘Janis F’ wrote on Tripadvisor: “Beautiful square with stunning buildings. Amazing to see what people in the past were able to build, which we can still admire today.”
It’s not too late to book a festive break away and Munich is a great option for a Christmassy holiday. The city’s Christkindlmarkt is held in Marienplatz and usually runs until Christmas Eve.

Bands play traditional Bavarian music and tourists can admire the city’s famous Nativity scenes with a mulled wine in hand.
The city’s Viktualienmarkt food market also has a Nativity scene in the beer garden and it’s one of the best spots to sample traditional festive treats such as cheese spaetzle.
In summer, Munich’s Englischer Garten is the perfect place to spend a warm day. One of the world’s largest urban parks, there’s a Japanese teahouse, lake and Chinese Tower.
Even outside of Oktoberfest, beer is a quintessential part of Bavarian culture and its beer halls are a must-see.
