The Beezantium is the first of its kind in the UK, where guests can watch several bee colonies inside a wooden and copper building produce honey from behind glass screens. The bespoke structure was created by The Newt hotel, near Bruton, who has a long history of beekeeping upon their Grade II-listed Georgian manor house surrounded by woodland and gardens.

Visitor’s will be lured inside as they listen to an audio guide about the history of our fuzzy friends, who help pollinate around a third of the food we eat.

Natural holes and copper pipes on the exterior allow busy workers to come and go from the wooden structure, which is situated in The Newt Garden.

Flower pressings reveal the different types of honey produced on the estate and there are lots of fun facts and info nuggets plastered to the honeycomb walls.

Beekeeper Paula Carnell (aka ‘Queen Bee’) or a member of her team, will be on hand for a Bee Safari walking tour (£10 per person) around the woodland to learn more about the rare, native and wild bees.

In fact, there are plenty of reasons why us humans need to give more credit to these furry insects, one being without them flying around the past 100 million years – we’d struggle to exist.

With the bee population in decline (around 270 species in Britain alone), a visit to the Beezantium is the perfect reason to discover more that will leave guests buzzing.

Even more fitting, this Saturday is World Honey Bee Day (August 21) raising awareness, the importance and pay homage to these hard workers.

After walking around the hidden gardens, you can even take part in a honey or cider tasting class, before taking home some fresh farm goods.

The Newt hotel has 23 guest rooms with luxury ensuite bathrooms to relax after a long day, or with a spa that has an indoor-outdoor pool and treatment rooms to fully unwind.

Book a Bee Safari (Monday to Friday) to find out how The Newt cares for its 16-plus colonies of chemical-free bees.
