A new study from EnjoyTravel looked at the best countries in the world for retired expats. The team looked at the cost of living, quality of life, ease of getting a visa and rent prices.

According to the team’s research, Slovenia is one of the best destinations in the world for Britons looking to retire abroad.
The team said: “It’s the best place to retire and it’s not hard to see why. Between its endless forests, alpine villages and colourful capital, there’s plenty to keep retirees occupied.
“English is widely spoken and temperatures are mild, with sunny summer and cosy winters. Pack your bags!”
Slovenia has a population of just over two million and has a diverse environment despite being one of the smallest countries in Europe.
Lake Bled is one of the country’s top tourist destinations and it’s not hard to see why it’s rated so highly on Tripadvisor.
A visitor said: “Gorgeous lake with turquoise water and beautiful scenery. I would highly recommend renting a boat and rowing across the lake to the small island.”
Another person wrote: “It was a breathtaking view. During the day, I hiked as there are a few hiking trails which are really wonderful.”
The small capital city, Ljubljana, is also popular with tourists and many enjoy drinking cocktails alongside the river.
Residents in Slovenia must have health insurance and UK nationals can access the healthcare system if they meet the requirements.
They must show proof of healthcare cover before registering as a resident or applying for a visa.
All residents need to pay for Slovenian national health insurance and anyone can access emergency medical treatment.
Slovenia has a high standard of healthcare and expats should be able to get treatment for most conditions there.
Portugal, a very popular expat destination, was ranked in second place and is a great choice for sun worshippers.
Areas such as the Algarve will have warm weather for much of the year and have established expat communities.
Spain was within the top five destinations and is one of the UK’s top expat destinations with many retirees living on the coast.
Expats will need to apply for Spanish residency from within the UK and will need to meet certain requirements.
