Britain’s worst seaside town has a ‘lovely clean seafront’ but it’s ‘run down’
A recent ranking of seaside towns by Which? Travel left Clacton-on-Sea at the bottom of the table.
The Essex resort failed to impress tourists with its town and the beach scored just three out of five in the Which? ranking.
However, it’s not all bad news for Clacton-on-Sea as some Tripadvisor reviewers praised the beach even as they slammed the resort.
One reviewer, ’Rachael S’, said: “We had a lovely little holiday and loved the beach and the pier. However, this is a very run down seaside town!”
Another reviewer ‘Ann H’ said: “Having not visited Clacton before, we spent a while wandering along the lovely clean seafront taking in the sea air.”
The seaside town grew during the early 1900s and was popular with Essex residents and East End Londoners.
However, its tourist industry fell on hard times when cheap flights to Mediterranean destinations became available in the 1970s.
One reviewer ‘David D’ said he decided not to go to the town’s beach after seeing the “filthy town centre”.

Seaside spot with ‘lovely golden sands’ is one of UK’s best[STAYCATION]
While some reviews claimed there was nothing to do in the seaside town, the pier had a four out of five star rating on Tripadvisor.
The town’s two theatres were also highly rated with one person saying their visit to Princes Theatre was “just awesome”.
Clacton-on-Sea’s beach has golden sand, making it a popular spot for families, despite the town’s poor rating.

Skegness also came at the bottom of the table in Which?’s ranking with many tourists left less than impressed.
Rory Boland, editor at Which? Travel, said: “Clacton, Skegness and Southend all received one star from visitors for the lack of peace and quiet, and some visitors complain that the boisterous atmosphere can tip into feeling unsafe.
‘That’s a shame, because what Clacton, Skegness and Southend offer is exactly the sort of seaside break many of us want. Big beaches, big entertainment and small prices. More should be done to help them level up and become first-class holiday resorts.”
