France is a popular destination for British expats, with Paris, the capital, a favourite with the younger generation. While Paris may not offer the great weather and relaxed lifestyle of the South of France, it still has plenty of appeal.

British expat Erleta moved to Paris after University and “enjoyed my life, work and friends so much” she never left.

While she had been in Paris for a while, she recalled her biggest surprise when moving to France.

She said: “My favourite surprise about working in France is all of the employee benefits!

“Average days of holiday are higher, there are a lot more bank holidays on top of that too.

“Lunch breaks are longer, and your lunch is also subsidised by the company which just blew my mind!”

British expat Emma said she was “harbouring a sense of adventure and a deep discomfort with life in London” when she decided to move to Paris.

She said the move from London to Paris “wasn’t that difficult”.

“The UK and France are not all that different when you boil it down to the bare bones”.

While Paris “still manages to thrill me”, she said one negative was the “constant attention”.

She explained: “The constant attention I get on the street from men.

“I’ve been cat-called, whistled at, had people get out of their cars or off their motorbikes to stop and chat me up.

“I’ve been followed home, chased home – you name it, it’s probably happened. It sucks.”

She also said the hardest experience of her expat life was “being sexually targeted by my boss”.

“He maintains it was a cultural difference. I disagreed and subsequently left the company.

“Learning to adapt to what are for me very outdated opinions and principles has been the most challenging aspect so far.”

While Emma may have had a traumatic experience, not every British expat encountered big problems.
