British tourists warned never to take wedding rings on summer holidays

There are lots of things it’s best to leave at home or somewhere safe while you travel. Expensive watches, laptops or anything you don’t want to lose in your luggage is top of the list.

But, generally we all tend to keep our important jewellery on us – both on the plane and while away – with wedding and engagement rings being the most common. They are supposed to be worn everyday after all!

While in another country it is important to stay aware and be responsible so that you don’t lose your important jewellery to thieves. There are even hacks for hiding your valuables in your hotel room.

However, now, British tourists have been warned not to wear their wedding rings on holiday for a completely different reason. A jewellery expert and managing director at Clogau, Ben Roberts, said that we shouldn’t wear rings while on a summer holiday somewhere hot.

He told the Express: "If you’re travelling abroad this summer, more often than not, it will be a much hotter destination than the UK and many of us forget the effects the hot weather has on our bodies. Our fingers can swell quite significantly when it gets hotter, making it almost impossible to wear rings."

If your fingers do swell up it may be difficult to get your rings on or off at the end of the day. Or, if you never take them off they may feel painfully tight.

According to Dr Bryony Henderson, lead GP at digital healthcare provider Livi, your fingers swelling up is part of how our bodies cool down. This is "because the blood vessels in our bodies expand to send more blood to the skin to cool down the body”. It can also lead to water retention which may make them extra puffy, claims MEN.

If you still want to wear a wedding ring, but don't want to risk your fingers being painfully squeezed then you can always opt for a stretchy silicone option. These are also great if you plan to do lots of swimming, hiking or sports as they won't get caught on anything or tarnish.

In addition to the possibility of swollen fingers is the risk that your precious rings will be lost at the airport. You might rarely take your rings off, but airport security may make you remove them for the x-ray scanners.

If they're placed in the plastic bins at security this increases the risk that they get lost. Whether because they fell out of the tray in the machine or because you forgot to pick them up at the end.

Ben added: "Going through security can be a rushed and stressful process. Every airport is different but in most cases you will be asked to remove the majority of your jewellery, shoes or accessories."

However, if you're still set on taking your metal wedding or engagement rings – which, to be honest, we don't blame you – then make sure you take photos of it before you fly. That way if you misplace it you'll have a recent photo to show people.

You should also make sure that any valuable rings are insured – and that the insurance covers theft or loss while abroad. That way you can claim for them if something bad does happen.
