Brits say UK forest break is ‘better than Center Parcs’ and cheaper for holidays

Staycations have boomed in popularity since Brits rediscovered their love of them during the coronavirus pandemic. Everything from beachside campsites to holiday parks is filling up each summer.

Some of the more popular breaks include woodland holidays where families rent a cabin and get stuck into the great outdoors. Centre Parcs is a hugely popular option thanks to its swimming paradise, great bike routes and plenty of fun activities like archery and mini golf.

However, while you might find a bargain break at one of the UK’s six locations during springtime it can be very expensive during school holidays.

But, staycationers claim there’s a holiday park in a forest that rivals Center Parcs. Some even say it’s better despite being cheaper in summer.

On TripAdvisor, a review by a Cambridge woman for Forest Holidays Sherwood Forest said: “Better than Center Parcs. As a complete devotee of Center Parcs, we only went to Forest Holidays Sherwood as it was a special birthday and accommodation allowing dogs seemed superior to Center Parcs.

“Our two storey golden Oak Lodge – no 1, was gorgeous! We were all delighted with the space, comfort, high spec finish, luxury fittings and in fact all aspects of the accommodation.

“The situation was lovely – wildlife abounding, including deer, and having Sherwood Pines just a few minutes away, allowing miles of beautiful walks and bike rides, was a joy. We've visited all Center Parcs many times, and so obviously walks etc, are very familiar to us now, and limited, but Sherwood Pines stretches for miles.”

She raved about the cafes, bike centre, log burner and hot tubs. Although, she did point out that there are more restaurants at the popular Centre Parcs location.

The woman continued: "We thought that at a fraction of the price, the accommodation was far superior at Forest Holidays. Granted there is no pool and nothing much for children to do, but for us it had all we wanted except for somewhere to eat out within walking distance.

"Comparing it with Center Parcs, we were surprised that this was the only thing we really missed, and can't wait to return."

Other holidaymakers were equally happy to sing its praises.

"We stayed in a log cabin absolutely outstanding. We would like to thank Ben The general manager, he is so professional from start to finish. The hot tub is amazing, the beds are comfortable, the kitchen area is good, the overall cleaning is outstanding," wrote one happy customer.

Another person described their holiday as a "paradise away from home" having also stayed in one of the luxury lodges.

Whether other families think the same completely depends on how much you’d prefer to use the pool and other child-friendly activities.

But, if you’re looking for a woodland holiday this summer then Forest Holidays could be a tempting option.

We took a look at the cost of a cabin for two adults and two children at the Sherwood Forest Centre Parcs resort. The cost for four days from July 24 started at £1249 for a two bedroom woodland lodge.

In comparison, a stay at a two-bedroom lodge at Sherwood Forest with Forest Holidays had prices from £805, based on the same travel dates. You can find out more at forestholidays.co.uk.

It's worth noting that prices can vary depending on your chosen dates.
