Summer has officially begun and camping and caravan sites across the UK are beginning to fill up with holiday hungry visitors. However, the warmer weather combined with fewer people jetting off overseas has seen a surge in bookings.

For last-minute planners, this could be a cause for concern.

However, according to Ed Bassett, UK country manager at Camptoo, there are still some destinations that are likely to have availability.

What’s more, the campsite platform manager revealed there are even some impressive deals to be had – with prices in the peak summer months starting at just £60 per night.

“There’s no doubt we’re in for another staycation boom this summer, however, we are also seeing reports of sky-high prices at British beauty spots,” said Mr Bassett.

“This is unsurprising given how limited travel options abroad are for the foreseeable, but we would encourage Brits to do their research and shop around for more affordable options.”

One way to bag a lower-cost deal is to be flexible about the location in which you pitch up.

“Our three top booked destinations are Scotland, Cornwall and the Lake District, so we would suggest looking at areas that aren’t typically as popular, to help ease pressures on the local environment and resources,” explained Mr Bassett.

“Destinations such as Somerset, Norfolk, Yorkshire, and the South Coast all offer incredible countryside views, less crowded tourist attractions and great campsites.

“There are so many attractions to discover like the National Trust sites, our world-class National Parks, and a stunning coastline just waiting for you.”

With an increase in demand, however, many Britons have found themselves faced with sky-rocketing costs.

In some cases, UK holidaymakers claim a coastal staycation has set them back almost double what a European break might have.

Research from Which? suggests that prices for UK holidays have risen by more than a third this summer.

However, Mr Bassett has pointed out that camping in certain locations can still be affordable if Britons do their research.

“Camptoo still has availability in June, July and August and with prices starting from £60 per night,” said Mr Bassett.

While holiday cottages or glamping might be the “in” activity for the summer, he also points to alternative options which could reduce costs and allow more freedom.

“Why not try renting a campervan or motorhome for your staycation?” Mr Bassett continued.

“The benefits are that you can enjoy our incredible, diverse country at your own pace whilst remaining within your household bubble.

“Most motorhomes and caravans are also self-contained, which is ideal for self-catering and lessens the need for shared facilities.”

While there are still holiday options out there, the Camptoo expert says holidaymakers should act as soon as they have decided what kind of staycation is best for them.

“Camptoo experienced a record number of bookings last week and a 100 percent increase over the last three months, which strongly suggests that even more people are choosing to book staycations this year,” he said.

“In addition, our booking data shows that 71 percent of bookings in the past 30 days have been made for trips in the next two months, showing shorter booking lead-times as people hurry to book summer travel slots.

“Aim to book in advance with a travel or accommodation provider that has a flexible booking policy for added peace of mind, like we do at Camptoo.

“Go somewhere you’ve never been before to make it an exciting British adventure.”
