Self-contained camping holidays are allowed to go ahead from April 12 under Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s roadmap out of lockdown. For many Britons, this may be swapping their usual springtime holiday overseas for something a little closer to home.
While camping may seem like a more modest alternative to a beach holiday, according to seasoned campers there are a number of essential items which can not be forgotten.
In a Reddit forum, dedicated to tips for first-time camping trips, holidaymakers have advised of one “crucial item” that travellers should not forget regardless of where they plan to set up their tent.
“Clean after yourself,” wrote one camping regular.
“I’ve seen too many forests littered with tons of plastic rubbish all over the world.
“It doesn’t only look bad, it’s also bad for the environment.
“A single plastic bag can take hundreds if not thousands of years to disappear, and any animal passing by can suffocate inside, or eat it.
“It’s as simple as that: leave the place cleaner than you found it.”
A second holidaymaker added: “Please make sure you take bags for your rubbish and ensure you carry everything out, leave no trace.”

Luckily, being environmentally conscious doesn’t need to take up a lot of space in your luggage.
The camper continued: “Small pedal bin liners are usually the perfect size and a roll doesn’t take up much room.”
Rubbish bags aren’t the only item campsite regulars have recommended, however.
In fact, holidaymakers have a long list of items they should take to ensure their comfort and safety.
Ziploc bags are also a “must-have” according to some people who commented on the Reddit forum.
An expert from Cloudy2Clear, who frequently work with caravan owners to repair elements of the vehicles, revealed one basic household item, which many of us already have tucked away in a kitchen drawer, could be crucial on a camping trip.
“If you’re only away for a few days, opt for ziplock bags instead of bulky makeup and wash bags,” they said.
“This way you can save space and stick to the essentials.”
Along with being a great way to store items, they are also excellent at keeping things dry should an unexpected raincloud loom overhead.
“It’s only a small thing but I always take a pack of sandwich/freezer bags, preferably the zip lock ones,” recommended a campsite regular on Reddit.
“If you’re hiking about and get caught in the rain throw your electrics in the sandwich bags and you’re good to go.”
A second added: “[Store your] spare batteries in ziplock bags, and then in a sleeping bag to keep them warm.
“Overnight temperatures will be lower than in your house.”
