Impressively, Chillingham has been owned by the same family since being fully fortified 1344, meaning several long-term residents are said to haunt the chambers.

Spooky activities that has been reported include a poltergeist of an injured soldier and a Spanish witch who curses those who dare steal from the castle.
Eight self-catering apartments are avaliable to book, with each room decorated with rare antics and mysterious tales for guests to decide if the rumours are true.
Couples looking for a quirky getaway can sleep in the The Guard Room, which has its own entry from the Valley Wing courtyard and a small kitchen wing.
Groups of four can select the the Grey Apartment – where former resident Lady Mary Berkeley died of heartbreak after hearing her husband cheated on her with her sister.
Private views of the medieval courtyard can also be seen from the comfort of your four-poster bed.
The the Dairy Apartment, and Coaching Rooms is big enough to welcome six brave souls and both promising a (hopefully) peaceful stay.
Other famous sightings reported by guests inlcude a ‘blue boy’ whose skeleton wearing blue blue clothes is believed to float above the beds.
Still not scared? There is even a torture room and dungeon you can enter at you own will where a stretching rack and a trap shows displays the gruesome secrets.
Free access around the castle grounds, which includes a topiary garden, lakes and unspoiled views of the Northumberland counryside with each stay.
There is even and a beach just a 20-minute drive from the grounds for a day out.
Hosting special occasions are no stranger to Chillingham Castle either, afterall several monarchs through the centuries have been welcomed guests.
Archery on the lawns for private functions and anniversary candle-lit dinners are just some examples that staff are happy to organise.
