Clever tool lets you find the cheapest times to fly for Christmas
The festive season is quickly arriving and many Brits must now be considering their plans for the holidays.
Travel site Kayak has created a new service that will help you bag the cheapest flights around Christmas time – and it’s all about when you choose to jet off. The Best Time to Travel Christmas and New Year tool analyses 8,000 global routes alongside historical data to recommend when you fly.
It’s all about the best days and times to book a flight to your desired destination and one example even saved 40% on comparable flights. The tool uses predictive data and simple graphs to let you compare day-by-day prices to find the best option out there. Plus, it even tells you how far ahead you should book to get the best price.

All you need to do to discover the information is type in where you want to fly and a travel period and the tool will recommend when you fly. I took a look at the tool to see whether it could really save me money and plugged in a flight from London to Paris for a four day trip.
The tool suggested travelling from Friday 22 December to Christmas Day claiming it could save me 24% on my airfare. Plus it claims booking 113 days in advance is the best way to save as much as possible though, of course, it’s already past that by now.
We tried an alternative destination and looked for a trip from Manchester Airport to Malta for four days. Kayak’s tool said to book 21 days ahead of your flight and travel from December 24 to December 27 to save 44% on your flights.
If you scroll down on the tool from your recommendation you can see the average cost of flights and when they go up and down each year – the middle of January seemed the best time to book a flight to Malta with some return flights costing as little as £52.
Kayak also lets you set a Price Alert for your flight route which will tell you when the prices change so you can book when you see the best option for you. It’s a great way to try and keep costs down and plan ahead to save money.
It's not just great to use for nearby flights either. I looked at when it was cheapest to fly to Sydney, Australia from the UK – London specifically – for a 14 day mega trip. The advice stated that the cheapest festive period would be to fly from December 12 to 25 saving a whopping 31%.
A return trip would cost around £1,216 but if you're not fussed about being there before Christmas then you can find tickets for around £1,080 in late January.
