A fuming husband has slammed United Airlines, claiming that cabin crew left his pregnant wife to clean up their toddler's mess 'on her hands and knees' during a recent flight.

American baseball player Anthony Bass took to Twitter to vent his frustration after his wife, Sydney Rae James, allegedly had to clean up the mess.

Posting a picture of their two children on the flight, he wrote: "The flight attendant @united just made my 22 week pregnant wife traveling with a 5 year old and 2 year old get on her hands and knees to pick up the popcorn mess by my youngest daughter.

    "Are you kidding me?!?!"

The complaint has sparked a major debate online with some saying it was rude to expect that staff to clean up after her.

When one person asked who should have cleaned up the mess, Anthony replied "the cleaning crew they hire".

He later added that the airline was investigating. In a follow-up post he wrote: "Thank you everyone for the support.

"United Airlines is taking care of matters with the flight attendant internally."

While some people claimed that he should not expect the crew to deal with his toddler's mess, others argued that it's the flight attendant's job and that a pregnant Sydney should not have had to do it.

One Twitter user said: "If she's so high risk why was she flying in the first place? And a flight attendant is not your personal maid."

"You’re sitting right next to your child," another added. "Oversee them eating their snack if they’re that young and messy."

While another woman wrote: "Why are people so aggressive about this, people accidentally spill all the time on flights, never once have I seen anyone forced to pick up a spill by the cabin crew – especially a child or pregnant woman."

A man added: "I get why people feel she should have to clean up after her child.

"But, I feel the airline should have been the ones to clean up the mess.

"That's like a movie theatre telling movie go'ers to clean up the aisle before they leave."

The Daily Star has contacted United Airlines for comment.
