Nestled in the village of Stoney Middleton, in the south east area of the Peak District, lies a Grade II listed building that’s been serving customers for almost a century. The Tollbar Fish and Chip Shop is one-of-a-kind chippy, has a story to tell, and is currently owned by Dr. Peter Grafton and his family.

According to 2Chill, the building first opened in the 1840s where money was collected from vehicle users who wanted to use the road.

As things changed over time, the Toll House was converted into a chippy in 1926 by original owner Eleanor Hall, who changed the original coal fired fryer to a gas alternative.

Now nearly one hundred years on, customers still queue to place their orders for their fish supper.

Since taking over the business in 2018, Peter’s family-run business has garnered a high reputation for their food, even winning the top three of the National Fish and Chip Awards.

To add to their list of accolades, the unique takeaway spot won the Good Food Award for Fish and Chips and the Revellers Choice earlier this year.

Speaking about running the UK’s only fish and chip shop in a Grade II listed building, Peter said: “What people want is good quality fish and chips. They tell us ‘don’t start doing pizzas, don’t start doing kebabs’ so we’ve stuck to traditional British fish and chips.

“We do that well and while I own it and my son owns it, that’s what we’ll continue to do.”

Originally from Chesterfield, the owners have also made sure that their packaging and food sources are ethically sustainable.

Peter explained: “Two and a half years ago we moved all our packaging over to paper and wood so there’s absolutely no plastic at all in our packaging because I think we’re in an area that deserves to be looked after so although it was a very expensive move, we thought it was a good move and that was well received.”

“It’s not just the packaging that is ethical; some of the food is locally sourced too.” he added. “The potatoes are grown less than five miles away. We sell British peas and we steep them ourselves overnight.

“All potatoes are prepared each morning fresh and we only sell the best Icelandic cod that money can buy.”

The 53-year-old believes the key to their business’ success is upholding their traditional values, and focusing on delivering the best fish and chips.

When they opened the fish and chip shop, they noticed some people were visiting to buy food for their elderly parents as this was the only hot meal they would have if their family bought it and took it home for them.

After discovering that were locals buying food for what would be the only hot meal their elderly relatives would recieve, it “really hit a nerve” with the family.

To provide a sense of community spirit, the Grafton family began offering a free delivery service to only the elderly and vulnerable on every Thursday.

In addition, to make sure that no food goes to waste, staff deliver any leftovers to the homeless people in the area.

And The Tollbar Fish and Chip Shop has not only won over the locals, but also A-List actor Tom Cruise, who is currently filming Mission Impossible 7 nearby.

Musician and radio presenter, Jarvis Cocker recently paid a visit and John Fury, boxer Tyson Fury’s father, is a regular.

With the chippy’s 100th anniversary getting close, Peter said that his son, Harry, set to take over and continuing the legacy.
