From Big Ben to the Mailbox, England is home to some iconic buildings. However, according to new research from angi, the most beautiful building in England is York Minster.
Since the 7th century, York Minster has been at the heart of Christianity in the north of the country.
The church’s stunning stained glass windows and intricate architecture attract tourists from all over the globe.
York Minster’s Rose Window is world famous and was produced in 1515 by Master Glazier Robert Petty.
The panels feature the red Lancaster roses alternating with the Tudor red and white roses to celebrate the marriage of Henry Tudor and Elizabeth of York.
One tourist wrote on Tripadvisor: “Must see cathedral in York, not religious visitors but this building is simply outstanding.”
Another said: “Although we aren’t religious, this is a must visit. The splendour and grace cannot fail to be appreciated.
“The majesty of the building alone is worth the entrance fee but there is so much more than that.”
A visitor added: “Spectacular! Truly stunning, never appreciated the history of York before, incredible place to visit!”
In 1984, the famous Minster was struck by a lightning bolt and town residents were shocked to see the roof engulfed by fire.
Bob Littlewood, superintendent of the Works, said: “We suddenly heard this roar as the roof started to come down and we just had to run as the whole thing collapsed like a pack of chairs.”
The fire cracked the glass in the cathedral’s world famous Rose Window but thankfully the window stayed in one piece.
In the aftermath of the fire, Blue Peter held a children’s competition to design new bosses for the cathedral roof.
The winning entries showed Neil Armstong’s first steps on the moon and the 1982 raising of Henry VIII’s warship, the Mary Rose.
If tourists go before Jan 5, they’ll be able to enjoy York Minster’s Christmas Tree Festival, which sees 40 trees on display around the cathedral.
The stunning trees are decorated to individual themes by local businesses, schools and charities.
Children can attempt the Christmas Tree Trail to spot several exciting features around the Cathedral.
The study looked for the most beautiful buildings in each country around the world. The world’s most beautiful building was the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona.
Paris’s famous Notre Dame came in second place while the Blue Mosque in Turkey made the top 10.
India’s Taj Mahal, Austria’s Schonbrunn Palace and the Hungarian Parliament Building were included in the top 12 buildings.
In the USA, the most beautiful building was Biltmore in Asheville, an 8,000 acre estate built by George Vanderbilt.
