European city with the best food is a gorgeous destination
One of the many joys of European travel is the opportunity to try new and authentic dishes and flavours.
Some holidaymakers even plan their trips around good food, travelling far and wide in search of culinary delights.
Now new research from women-only tour company Solo Female Travelers Tours has revealed the top 10 cities in Europe for foodies.
Analysing data from Tripadvisor, including the number of restaurants serving local cuisine, vegetarian and vegan-friendly restaurants, and Michelin-star establishments, index scores were awarded out of 10 for each factor based on the number of establishments, the travel experts were able to determine each city’s ranking.
1. Paris, France
It may come as no surprise that Paris has been crowned the best city in Europe for food-lovers. The French capital city boasts an index score of 74.69, receiving the highest possible score out of 10 for the number of restaurants overall.

Paris has a reputation as the perfect location for visitors who enjoy fine dining, and the data backs this up – scoring a maximum 10 for the number of Michelin-star restaurants.
2. Florence, Italy
Italian cuisine is widely regarded as one of the most popular in the world, and has a number of cities that feature in the top 10.
Florence takes the silver medal with an index score of 70.39, with the capital city of Tuscany receiving the highest possible score out of 10 in a number of categories, including the number of vegetarian-friendly restaurants and establishments offering local cuisine.
A must-try in Florence is tagliatelle with porcini mushrooms and truffle sauce, a local delicacy suitable for vegetarians.
3. Rome, Italy
Italy’s capital city, Rome, ranks as the third best European city for foodies with an index score of 67.12.

A city jam-packed with attractions and things to do, it received a near-perfect score of 9.99 for the number of restaurants in the city, meaning visitors will be spoilt for choice of where to eat.
4. Dublin, Ireland
Dublin has been awarded the fourth spot in the rankings with an index score of 61.57. The Irish capital is well known for its lively atmosphere, and scored 9.99 for its number of vegan-friendly restaurants.
5. Bologna, Italy
The third Italian city to occupy the top five is Bologna, securing fifth place with an index score of 61.36. Known for its historical significance and stunning architecture, Bologna earned a surprising 10 for the number of bars and pubs, as well as for the number of establishments that offer online delivery.
6. Amsterdam, Netherlands
Amsterdam claims the sixth spot in the list with an index score of 60.09. The Dutch capital stands out for a score of 8.74 for the number of vegan-friendly establishments.
7. Milan, Italy
Milan becomes the latest Italian city to make the list, taking seventh spot with an index score of 59.08.
Known as the fashion capital of Italy, Milan has plenty of things to do including canal-side drinks in the Navigli District. You don’t have to worry about eating out every night, as Milan received a score of 7.81 for establishments offering online delivery.
8. Barcelona, Spain
Narrowly behind seventh-placed Milan in eighth place is Barcelona, with an index score of 59.00. The Spanish city is a hit for people watching their diets, earning a high score of 7.63 for the number of restaurants offering healthy food.
9. Naples, Italy
Naples is the fifth and final Italian city to feature, meaning that Italian cuisine makes up half of the list. Not only famous for being the birthplace of pizza, Naples received a high score of 7.42 for the number of restaurants offering coffee.
10. Madrid, Spain
Completing the top 10 is Madrid, with an index score of 56.26. The Spanish capital received a high score of 10 for the number of restaurants overall, so whatever food you’re fancying, there’s sure to be a spot for you.
A spokesperson from Solo Female Travelers Tours has commented on the findings: “Our data suggests that 63 percent of women consider how appealing the local gastronomy is when choosing a destination. Foodies will be particularly interested in these 10 cities which stand out for their culinary scene.
“Most of these cities are also in the most visited countries in the world such as France, Italy or Spain, and are popular destinations in our portfolio of tours for women, where we curate rich and immersive food and wine experiences at homes, wineries and farms.”
