Many ghost hunters head to old houses and hotels roomed to be haunted through October to try and spot a ghoulish apparition.
Thanks to its long and rich history, Europe has a plethora of hotels and old buildings with a rather spooky history – and many claim to be visited by spirits regularly.
According to Google Trends searches for haunted hotels have risen by a whopping 588% this month while Halloween breaks have seen an uplift of 5,500%!
In response Wizz Air has collated some of the spookiest and most haunted destinations in Europe you should check out this Autumn.
Italy
Thanks to the region's ancient history Italy has plenty of haunted locations – and the best are unsurprisingly in Rome.
The Roman catacombs, although perhaps less well-known than the catacombs of Paris, are some of the oldest in the world.
Kilometres-long, these underground labyrinths contain thousands of bones spread out beneath the outskirts of the city.
It was against Roman law to bury the dead inside the city walls so now there are more than 60 catacombs spreading from beyond the traditional centre.
Five are open to the public – the Catacombs of San Sebastiano, San Callisto, Priscilla, Domitilla and Sant’Agnese.
Iceland
Höfði house is the most notoriously haunted house in Iceland.
It's said to be home to the ghost of Sólborg Jónsdottir, a young woman who poisoned herself after the owner, judge Einar Benediktsson's verdict on an assault case.
Meanwhile, Hólavallagarður cemetery is thought to be guarded by the ghost of Guðrún Oddsdóttir, who died in 1838.
This is because in Icelandic folklore, the first person buried in a graveyard is the guardian of the site and will come back and protect all the dead that follow them.
Hungary
Gellért Hill is a World Heritage Site that provides stunning views of Budapest.
It’s covered in supposedly healing springs and is said to be the site of witchcraft, sorcery, and demons, dating back to witches’ covens in the Middle Ages.
Portugal
Outside of the city of Porto sits the Sanatório de Valongo, – a sanitarium built for tuberculosis patents in 1910.
The epidemic spread to hundreds and patients were abandoned in the building until they all passed away.
Now, it is believed that their souls haunt the corridors and visitors claim to have hard ghostly cries.
Meanwhile you can also head to Little Castle of São João do Estoril – apparently one of the most haunted houses in the regions.
Owners of the property have reportedly moved away in fear and locals say they’ve seen strange happenings and “evil powers” around the home.
It’s thought that the daughter of the first owners sadly drowned and her spirit can be seen wandering around near the property.
Spain
In Madrid, the Casa de las siete chimeneas – house of seven chimneys – was owed by a Captain and his wife.
After the soldier died at war his wife, Elena, was found dead in their bedroom.
It’s rumoured her body disappeared without a trace and that her ghost haunts the house still.
Meanwhile, in an even darker tale, the mansion in Malaga called Cortijo Jurado is said to be plagued by spirits.
It was once owned by the Heredia family, who, it is claimed, kidnapped young girls for satanic rituals.
Visitors report strange sounds, mysterious forces and paranormal investigators say that there is "inexplicable ghostly phenomena" in the area.
