Research by Moneybarn looked at the cost of toll roads in Europe and the UK to find out which roads cost the most for British tourists. Some of the fees could make a road trip overseas very expensive.
Unsurprisingly, the most expensive toll fee was the Eurotunnel, connecting the UK with France.
The toll charge for the Eurotunnel is 132 euros (£109) making a drive to France pretty pricey for British tourists.
Outside of the Eurotunnel, the next most expensive road in Europe was the Øresund Bridge.
The famous bridge connecting Denmark and Sweden costs 55 euros (£45) to drive across on a Scandinavian adventure.
The bridge is the longest of its kind in Europe which might go some way to explaining the heavy toll.
Those who don’t drive can take the train across the bridge and enjoy spectacular views from their carriage.
The Øresund Bridge takes around 10 minutes to drive across and became world-renowned when it featured in the Scandinavian hit drama, The Bridge.
An estimated 20,000 commuters use the bridge every day and the price for a frequent user is cheaper.
The third most expensive road in Europe is the Mont Blanc tunnel between France and Italy.
The highway tunnel runs under Mont Blanc in the Alps and is often used by tourists heading on ski holidays.
A journey through the Mont Blanc tunnel will cost tourists 47.40 euros (£39.42) making it one of Europe’s priciest roads.
One person tweeted: “The toll fee for a car is the most expensive toll fee I have ever paid.”
In joint third place and one of the most expensive roads in Europe is the Fréjus Road Tunnel between Italy and France.
The tunnel runs under the Cottian Alps and is one of the major trans-Alpine routes between the two nations.
A trip through the tunnel costs 47.40 euros (£39.42) and saw 20 million vehicles in its first 20 years of opening.
In next place was the Großglockner Hochalpenstraße in Austria, coming in at 37.50 euros (£31.19) per trip.
The highest surfaced mountain pass road in Austria, the major route is named after the country’s highest mountain.
Austria had some of Europe’s most expensive roads with another six of its routes making the top 10.
Each of the roads had a toll of at least 20 euros (£16.63) making Austria an expensive destination for a road trip.
British tourists will need to check the latest rules before driving in Europe as some regulations have changed since the end of the Brexit transition period.
