Europe’s safest city is the ‘perfect tourist town’ and very walkable
While travel is never completely risk-free, there are a few holiday destinations that are safer than others. According to a study by Reassured, Salzburg in Austria is Europe’s safest city.
Salzburg has a low crime rate and according to Numbeo very few people worry about being attacked or vandalism in the city. Nearly 90 percent of people said they felt safe walking alone at night.
It’s unsurprising that Reassured also rated it as one of the best places to raise a family as an expat. Known as the birthplace of Mozart, Salzburg is also a popular tourist destination.
Its Old Town or Altsadt is easily explorable on foot and many of the city’s top attractions are within a short walk of each other.
A tourist ‘Robert P’ wrote on Tripadvisor: “Lovely area to walk around, small enough not to tire the feet. Salzburg is almost the perfect tourist town, history and scenery combined.”

Zug in Switzerland and Leiden in the Netherlands were the next safest cities on the list and each has a low crime rate.
Switzerland dominated the list with several of the country’s other cities also making the safety ranking.
Each of the cities was rated as much safer than several of the UK’s major cities, including London and Leeds.
