In honour of ‘National Read a Book Day’ set to take place on September 6, holiday accommodation providers Independent Cottages have rounded up some storybook-inspired properties. Each place has details and touches that pay tribute to their beloved novel that has captured the hearts and imaginations of readers for generations. So grab your books and bags and book your next UK staycation on these five whimsical destinations.
The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett – A Secret Garden
One of the most iconic children’s books is A Secret Garden, this cottage has you guessed it, a private garden filled with as much magic and colour just like the story.
Suitably nestled in Kent, also known as the ‘Garden of England’, guests will feel like the great outdoors has been brought inside to their cosy abode.
Standout features at this accommodation include a log burner next to a cosy corner sofa, with a rustic fire pit in the secluded garden space.

Train enthusiasts will be delighted to see vintage locomotives passing right outside the accomodation with and the actual building was even designed by engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel.

The characters in this story live in a fictional version of Edwardian England, and any holidaymakers dreaming of a staycation that could have come straight out of the book itself should look no further.
Anyone looking for a rural break that looks like Edwardian England needs to look no further than Boatmans, a two-bedroom cottage on the banks of the River Deben in Letheringham, Suffolk.
Readers will think that they have stumbled on Ratty’s riverbank house, which sits on a private garden along the waterside and gardens.
There are charming touches all around Boatmans, exposed wooden beams, a roll-top bath and a glass conservatory dining room that overlooks the lawn and river.
