Holidaymakers often have their own hacks that make them feel comfortable when going on holiday, but it's the flight attendants who know travel from back to front. Many cabin crew members follow specific safety routines when checking into any hotel.

Some tourists may feel like their advice is overkill, but for flight attendants who stay in hotels every week or more they'd rather be safe than sorry! Following their hacks could help to prevent you being harmed by an intruder.

Esther, @esthersturrus, a member of cabin crew from Dutch airline KLM, explained that she uses an odd trick she while travelling – one that can protect you against people hiding in your bedroom. Ester explained that she uses a water bottle to help keep her safe. She claims that it hooks her "check that no one is under the bed without looking".

The flight attendant commented that if she’s ever worried that someone is under her hotel room bed she simply throws "a bottle under it". If there isn’t an intruder it will "come out on the other side". Esther noted that if you are in danger from someone hiding the bottle will become stuck under the furniture item. But you have to ensure there’s nothing blocking the underside of the bed such as a suitcase.

Ester also revealed that she places a shoe in her hotel room safe to make sure she didn’t forget to collect things from the safe before leaving – such as passports, money and jewellery. Plus, the cabin crew member always makes sure she checks her hotel room for hidden cameras. Esther begins by checking the mirrors in her bathroom by pressing on the glass to see if she notices any disturbances, reflected lights or bending.

Cameras will sometimes be stored behind mirrors to spy on those using the room. Esther also checks the shower and the fire alarm edges with her phone torch looking for any lenses or lights. She also looks all around the room at curtains, drawers and her TV to ensure nobody is trying to spy on her. It may seem dramatic, but a number of nations including South Korea have documented mounting cases of hidden camera use in rental apartments and hotels.

Esther's not the only flight attendant with a clever security hack either. Former flight attendant Nassim recently spoke to Express about the best ways to stay safe in a hotel room. She claims that her suitcase hack is the best way to ensure nobody breaks into your room at night.

She said that her number one tip for people staying in hotels – in the UK or overseas – is that she always keeps her suitcase or handbag by the door. It sounds simple and it is because the hack will alert hotel guests if someone is trying to enter their room. Previously, hotel workers have warned Brits to keep their suitcase in the bathroom to avoid taking bed bugs home. While another advised people to hide some spare money in shampoo bottles.
