Flight attendant recommends crisp packet hack to keep valuables safe on holiday

When going on holiday generally the most worrying part is getting on your plane in time. Once that’s done there’s nothing to do but collect your luggage and relax at the hotel.

However, one flight attendant has pointed out that you should still be aware that crime does happen abroad. There’s little worse than being in a foreign country and having your cash or passport stolen.

So, if you choose to leave you valuables in a hotel room you might want to use this travel hack to keep them where they belong. Miguel Muñoz suggests using a crisp packet, reports the Express.

The cabin crew member claims that using random items to stash your goods can keep them safe – even an "empty bag of crisps or tin foil".

Miguel also noted that families with small children can use nappies to hide things. After all, thieves are unlikely to look in what they think is a dirty nappy for valuables.

Unfortunately, some travel fans over at Wheressharon did note that there’s one downside to the hack. "I suggest not doing this when your room is about to be cleaned. This could also work well when walking around," they said.

Basically, the room staff may throw away items they think are rubbish so make sure that if you use the hack it’s not on a day where your room is set to be cleaned. Other good hiding places include inside pockets in clothing and you can keep notes in the bible that’s often in the bedside table.

Meanwhile it seems the worst places to hide things are in the wardrobe and under the bed – as any experienced thief will know to check there. Placing valuables in your suitcase or in the laundry basket also are not good ideas.

Experts also note that you should "forget about the in-room safe" as apparently thieves may be able to break into it or even take it with them if it’s not secured. Fortunately, most hotels are unlikely to see such crimes committed if they are a well-rated establishment.

You can bring your valuables out with you if you’re particularly worried. Placing them in a bumbag around your waist or hidden in empty sunscreen containers are both useful ways of keeping them safe.

Over at Skyscanner, experts suggested some of their own safety rules. They explained: "To avoid the worst-case scenario of being robbed, it’s best to be inconspicuous. Don’t flash cash or expensive jewellery.

"If you’re worried about valuable stuff in your hotel room, hide it in an empty suntan lotion container.

"You could also use empty lip balm containers to hide rolled-up notes. You could also consider getting travel insurance."
