Flight attendant shares the ultimate ‘upgrade outfit’ – it ‘definitely helps’

A flight attendant urged those passengers who want to be upgraded on their flight and not pay for it to avoid wearing “jeans or trainers” and instead, recommended opting for more formal attire.

Talking about the most effective ways to get a free upgrade on board, the crew member said: “No jeans or trainers – so I always go for tight black trousers and a blazer or a dress. For men, chinos or trousers and a shirt are worn.

“It definitely helps your chances. When we fly, we have a strict dress code to follow,” they told Who What Wear.

Another advised passengers who want to be upgraded to First Class to dress “smart but understated” as “it’s all about looking the part”.

They explained: “You should look like you travel often. But don’t be dripping in designer clothing.

“It helps; someone who is potentially due to get an upgrade can be knocked back if they aren’t dressed suitably.”

Another crew member shared a hack for those who like to travel in comfortable clothes, and said that they can always change on the plane.

They explained: “I always carry trackies on long-haul, and it is acceptable for us to change on board.”

Former flight attendant Celina Bedding exclusively talked to Express.co.uk about the clothes holidaymakers should “avoid at all costs”.

She revealed that casual clothing, such as leggings, open-toed shoes, sandals and flip flops, should be avoided when flying.

Flight attendants are more likely to upgrade passengers who “dress smarter,” according to Celina.

“They will look for people who they understand won’t disturb the other passengers that actually paid for those expensive seats,” she said.

The flight attendant recommended “casual work or business attire” or alternatively, in the summer months “long dresses look nice”.
