Flight attendant warns passengers to avoid flip-flops and sandals on planes
Many of us dream of flying in first or business class, but are put off by the extortionate prices. For this reason, most of us hope to bag the best seats on the plane by getting a free upgrade.
While they’re not hugely common, free upgrades to happen – and you get to enjoy the lie-flat seats, better quality food and free drinks of the higher classes while flying. Recently, a flight attendant explained that certain clothing could prevent you from getting such an upgrade.
Former flight attendant Celina Bedding told the Express that if you want an upgrade to first class you should "avoid" particular clothes. This includes three distinct types of shoes.

This is apparently because passengers in business and first class should generally aim to “dress smarter”. That way they’ll blend in more with the expensive vibes of the cabin.
Celina shared that when they are choosing passengers to be upgraded, they're looking for people who "won't disturb the other passengers that actually paid for those expensive seats." She explained that leggings were a big no-no – Celina said you should "never" wear them or joggers.
Open-toed shoes, sandals, and flip-flops should also be avoided when you’re hoping for an upgrade. So stick to trainers, shoes or closed-toe sandals.
If you’re baffled by what to wear while being comfortable, Celina recommended a nice blazer and a pair of comfortable jeans. So, a generic smart casual dress code.
For women, she added: "Long dresses also look nice". If you’re not someone willing to wear jeans on a plane ride then a nice pair of trousers could also work.
Hoping for a free upgrade isn't the only reason why you should avoid some clothing items though. Flight attendants have previously said that leggings and flip flop should be avoided for safety reasons.
Aviation pro Christine Negroni claims that wearing leggings or yoga pants could put your life at risk. She said: "You might have to escape through a cabin fire or there could be a separate fire on the ground once you leave the aircraft.
"Everyone is wearing yoga pants on planes now, but I avoid all artificial fibres because they are more likely to burn and stick to you if there is a fire. I’d advise wearing cotton clothes or anything made of natural fibres."
Meanwhile, flight attendants and pilots recently explained that you should never wear flip flops on the aircraft. Tony Kuna, wrote on Quora: "During an emergency, all sorts of debris and unpleasant ground surfaces will block your way towards the exit, as well as outside the aircraft.
"If your feet [aren’t] properly covered, you'll have a hard time making your way to safety. Imagine destroying your bare feet as your run down the aisle covered with broken glass, fires and metal shards. Kind of like John McClane in Die Hard, but worse."
